Why Use an Online Tuner Instead of Tuning by Ear

Tuning by ear works when you already have one string in tune and a quiet room. Most of the time you have neither: new strings keep stretching, rehearsals are loud, and alternate tunings mean remembering a new set of notes. An online tuner hears each string and points you to the exact note in seconds, on a device you already carry.

  • New strings stretch for days, so a guitar that was in tune an hour ago drifts flat again.
  • Tuning each string from the one below it adds small errors that pile up across the neck.
  • Clip-on tuners get lost, run out of battery or sit in the other gig bag.
  • Alternate tunings like drop C or DADGAD mean looking up the notes for every string.
  • Singers rarely have a reference at all, so warmups start slightly off pitch.

What the Online Guitar Tuner Gives You

Everything a clip-on tuner does, plus the tunings and instruments it usually leaves out.

Live Needle in Cents

A needle shows how far each string is from its note, turns green within a few cents and tells you whether to tune up or down.

Automatic String Detection

Pluck any string and the tuner works out which one it is, so you never tap through a menu in the middle of a song.

Drop D, Drop C and Open Tunings

Standard, half and full step down, drop D, drop C, drop B, DADGAD and open G, D, E or C are ready as presets, with every string labelled.

Bass, Ukulele, Violin and Cello

Switch to 4 or 5 string bass, ukulele, violin, viola or cello, and use chromatic mode for any other instrument.

Voice Tuner Mode

Singers see the nearest note and how far off they are: a simple, free online vocal tuner for warmups and practice.

Private and Free

The microphone is analyzed in your browser and never recorded or uploaded. No account and no limits.

How to Tune a Guitar With This Online Tuner

Three steps, and about a minute for all six strings.

  1. 1

    Start the tuner

Click Start and allow the microphone. A laptop or phone mic works fine; hold it close to the sound hole or the amp.

  2. 2

    Pick an instrument and tuning

Choose guitar, bass, ukulele, violin, viola, cello or voice, then the tuning you want, from standard to drop D or open G. The target note of every string appears on screen.

  3. 3

Pluck one string and follow the needle

Play one string at a time and let it ring. Tune up toward the note until the needle sits in the green and the string lights up, then move on and check them all once more.

Features of the EzTranscriber Guitar Tuner

From drop tunings for heavy riffs to a tuner for your voice.

Drop D Tuner and Drop C Tuner Presets

Drop D lowers only the low E string a whole step to D, which gives you one finger power chords and a heavier low end. Pick the preset and the drop D tuner shows D A D G B E, so the electric guitar tuner drop D setting is one tap away in this drop D guitar tuner. For drop C tuning, tuner presets save even more time: every string comes down a whole step and the low string drops to C, giving C G C F A D. The drop C tuner for guitar checks each of those notes, so you never need a separate guitar tuner for CGCFAD or a chart in another tab. Use it as a drop D tuner for guitar students learning their first riffs, a drop D tuning guitar tuner for rock and a drop C tuning guitar tuner for heavier bands.

Tune to Drop D

Voice Tuner for Singing

Switch to voice mode and the online tuner becomes a vocal tuner: sing a note and see its name and how many cents sharp or flat you are, with no strings to choose. It is a tuner for your voice, not an auto-tune effect, so your sound never changes; it simply shows the pitch so you can tune your voice yourself. Use it as a singing tuner online for warmups, a tuner for vocals before you record, or a tuner for singing lessons. For a full pitch graph and a vocal range test, open the pitch detector.

Tune My Voice

Bass, Ukulele and Violin Tuning

The same tuner covers the rest of the band. Bass players get standard E A D G, drop D, half step down and 5 string B E A D G. Ukulele players pick standard G C E A with a high or low G, D tuning or baritone D G B E. Violinists get the standard tuning for violin, G3 D4 A4 E5, viola and cello players get C G D A, and the needle is fine enough for the small tuners on the tailpiece. Anything else, from mandolin to a tuning you invented, works in chromatic mode, which simply shows the nearest note and how far off it is.

Reference Tones and A4 Calibration

Prefer to tune by ear? Tap a string on the headstock to hear a plucked, synthesized reference tone and match it, which trains your ear at the same time. If your band or a recording uses a different concert pitch, set A4 anywhere from 430 to 450 Hz, 432 or 442 for example, and every target note follows. The online pitch tuner keeps listening while you play, so you can check your ear against the needle string by string.

Who Uses an Online Tuner

Anyone with strings to tune or a note to sing.

Guitarists

Tune before practice, switch to the drop C guitar tuner preset for one song and back to standard for the next, then turn a recording into tabs with the guitar tab generator.

Bassists

Low strings are hard to judge by ear, and the needle shows exactly where they sit. Keep the mic close to the amp, because phone mics barely hear the lowest notes.

Singers and Choirs

Use the voice tuner online, free, to find a starting note and check long notes during warmups.

Ukulele Players

Pick the high or low G and tune all four strings in under a minute, even on a phone.

Teachers

Tune a room full of instruments quickly and show students what in tune looks like on the needle.

Producers

Check a guitar or bass before a take, then confirm the key of the song with the BPM and key finder.

What Players Say About Our Online Tuner

I switch between standard and drop C several times a night. Having both presets in a browser tab on my phone beats the pedal tuner I always forget.

Ryan Mitchell

Metal Guitarist

Our choir uses the voice tuner during warmups. Everyone sees the same note on the projector and the long chords finally lock in.

Grace Liu

Choir Director

The reference tones are what we needed. My son tunes his violin by ear first, then checks the needle, and his ear has improved a lot.

Maria Gonzalez

Parent

I keep this open at rehearsals. Drop D for one song, standard for the next, and the needle tells me straight away which way to turn.

Online Tuner FAQs

Quick answers about tuning guitar, bass, ukulele, violin and your voice.

How do I use an online tuner?

Click Start at the top of this page and allow the microphone. Choose your instrument and tuning, then play one string at a time. The online tuner names the string, shows how far off it is and turns green when it is in tune.

Is this guitar tuner free?

Yes. It is free, with no sign-in and no limits, because the tuning happens in your browser.

How do I tune to drop D?

Pick the guitar tuner's drop D preset, then lower only the low E string until the drop D tuner shows D in the green. A quick check: the low string should sound one octave below the open D string. Drop D tuning online takes less than a minute this way.

How do I tune to drop C?

Choose the guitar tuner's drop C preset and tune every string down a whole step, then drop the low string to C: C G C F A D from low to high. Come up to each note from slightly below and the drop C tuner confirms every string. It works as a drop C tuning online tuner for electric and acoustic guitars alike.

What is a voice tuner?

A voice tuner shows the note you are singing and how many cents sharp or flat you are. It does not change your voice like auto-tune; it helps you hear and fix your own pitch. A free online voice tuner mode is built into this page, and voice tuning online works best with one steady note close to the mic.

Can I tune a bass or a ukulele?

Yes. Pick bass for standard, drop D, half step down or 5 string tuning, or ukulele for G C E A with a high or low G, D tuning or baritone. Violin, viola, cello and a chromatic mode for any other instrument are there too.

Is there a drop B guitar tuner?

Yes. Pick the guitar's drop B tuner preset: B F# B E G# C# from low to high, a favorite for metal. Heavier strings help the low B hold its pitch. For a tuning that is not listed, chromatic mode shows the nearest note.

What is the standard tuning for violin?

From the lowest string: G3, D4, A4 and E5, each a fifth apart. Tune the A string first, then the others, and use the fine tuners for small changes.

What does A4 = 440 Hz mean?

It is the reference pitch most music is tuned to: the A above middle C vibrates 440 times per second. Some orchestras tune to 442 Hz and some players prefer 432 Hz; set the calibration to match and every string follows.

Should I tune up or down to a note?

Tune up. If a string is sharp, go a little below the note first, then bring it back up, so the tuning peg holds the string where you leave it.

Why does the tuner show the wrong string?

Open strings ring with overtones, and other strings can ring along in sympathy. Mute the strings you are not tuning, pluck firmly and let the note settle, or pick the string by hand instead of using automatic detection.

Can I change tuning between songs?

Yes. To change tuning, pick another preset and retune only the strings that differ; the tuning chart above highlights them for every preset.

Is my audio uploaded?

No. The vocal tuner online, free and private, analyzes the microphone on your device and never records it or sends it to a server. It stops listening when you press Stop or leave the page.
